Happy 112th Birthday Louis Kahn

Louis Kahn, the American architect famed for combining Modernism with the weight, dignity and monumentality of ancient structures, was born 112 years ago today. His famous contemporary, Philip Johnson famously said of him, "he was his own artist. He was free, compared to me."

Among his Modernist works include the Salk Institute, the National Assembly of Bangladesh, the Exeter Library and the Kimbell Art Museu,. His last completed design, for the Four Freedoms Park in New York, was also finally completed in 2012.

The impression he left as an individual is equally as mythical. His sometimes esoteric but always insightful understanding of architecture led to him to being often described as a ‘mystic’ or a ‘guru’, and a complex private life inspired his son to film the Academy Award Nominated documentary “My Architect” in 2003.

Being one of my favourite architects, Kahn's buildings remind me of what I hope for my life's work - hopefully I will have the privilege of creating spaces that inspire others, that are well utilized and well-loved.  In celebrtation of the life of artistry that Louis Kahn led, I've included some of his most seminal work, and the film, "My Architect" which examines the complex genius behind the work.
