"You said I was the most exotic flower, holding me close in the final hour."
Ok, so I know that all the recent hype over Lana del Rey has the majority of us regugitating in our mouths, but I have to admit that I'm one of the lucky few who have managed to see the beauty in the slightly over hyped, bee stung lipped singer, which seamlessly segways me into my new my next del Rey related topic: Style. Ok, so she describes herself as the "gangsta Nancy Sinatra", why she has to spell it "gansta" as opposed to "gangster" is beyond me, but she's one of the most innovative, talented and pretty little things to come out of the mainstream music industry in recent years. I've alays had a penchant for referencing several eras by mashing them together in an eclectic way, and Lana does it so well. Note the ghetto gold knuckle dusters, chain and cat nails teamed with relaxed 40s curls, red lipstick and heavy cat-eye flicks. She oozes ghetto blasting femme fatale, selling her own brand of Hollywood sad-core while she's at it. What only adds ot the meloncholy and nostalgia is her jaded tone, making me question: who in hell broke this bitch's heart? But all aside, I think the most alluring thing about Lana del Rey's style is that it is, for me, the total embodiment of her entire essence. In conclusion, I can understand the hype surrounding her: She's beautiful, talented, vulnerable, enigmatic and above all, captivating like Nancy Sinatra in majestic slow motion.
Her Meloncholy doesnt phas me in the slightest. I just think thats her default emotion and theres nothing wrong with that. "I'm always singing about the same god damn person, but its all good." Aight that the damn truth. Preach girl, PREACH. I love the way that she constantly references the past and I can respect her for that.
"Born to Die". Note the art direction.
"Yayo". In my opinion, best parallels her vocal stylings to the late Nancy Sinatra.
