Culture: The Homeless

For a long time, homelessness has been a popular social documentary subject, but its been hard to find one which didn't represent a bias POV. I've found a fantastic Youtube channel which documents homeless people - bringing their stories and a personal view of their predicament. Many want the chance to move out of it and better themselves, of course this series cannot be a blanket overview of what all homeless people feel or experience, but it made me realize just how easy it is for people to slip from one life to another - only slipping slowly into the world and things their former selves would never imagine they'd do - a scary prospect. What does the fututre hold that we cannot control? Who will we become? Will we ever be forced to do things we never wanted to become? It really is that easy. Of course, the catalyst which defines most of these cases is an unstable home mixed with bad company and a strong propensity for addiction. All this intersecting with uncontrollable motives or lack there of from the government.

If this year has taught me anything, its that nothing is known, nothing is promised, all you have is now, the past is gone and the future is unpredictable.  It got me thinking of how important it is to bring stories of those who have no voice - and to be kind because everyone is fighting their on battle. How easy, it is to slip under the radar, to find yourself in these situations, without help, going from a good family, well-educated, to homeless and living day to day making ends meet through addiction and neglect from those who should care. This resilience in the human condition has and always will interest me.

All social issues aside, I find this form of social documentary and journalism compelling, invasive, emotive, honest and introspective. It paints a portrait of how intelligent and eloquent, capable, smart and resilient they are. It hit home pretty hard - knowing how fragile my emotions and mental state can be  - sometimes I feel like if i didn't have the amazing people I have around me, it would be easy as fuck for me to fall into a slump like this.

How fragile our existences are and how influenced by circumstance.
